Leeds Law Society has announced Luke Corcoran, a lawyer at the Government Legal Department (GLD), as its new President for 2025–26.
Luke, who has served as Director of Leeds Law Society for the past seven years, brings a deep understanding of the legal landscape in the region. His appointment marks a significant moment for the Society, as he becomes the first government lawyer to hold the role.
Commenting on his appointment, Luke Corcoran said:
“To be chosen as the President of the Leeds Law Society is an incredible career highlight.
Leeds Law Society has been in existence for over two centuries, during which time the legal profession has undergone significant transformations. Having been the Director of Leeds Law Society for the past 7 years, I take great pride in our ability to adapt and evolve to address the needs of our members.
Leeds Law Society continues to be a fantastic representative body proud of our history but welcoming and embracing change. The legal sector, and society generally, has seen a lot of change over that period but we have continued to meet the evolving needs of our members, whether it’s focusing on diversity and inclusion in our profession, or helping legal organisations navigate the world of legal technology.
I’m proud to be the first government lawyer to take on this role. Being a government lawyer is such a unique role that you can’t find anywhere else and it’s a big reason why I’m now approaching 8 years in the department. My work in GLD focuses on advising the Ministry of Justice on procurement law and commercial contract issues. It’s a privilege to see your work form the government’s legal agenda and to help the government govern well on behalf of wider society.
Looking forward, I’m excited to see what I can bring to the role over the next 12 months. I will be Head Judge at the upcoming Yorkshire Legal Awards 2025, which brings together the region’s legal community to recognise and celebrate its many achievements. It’s such an important night for the Yorkshire legal community and I can’t wait to celebrate our many achievements. My first President’s Column for the Leeds and Yorkshire Lawyer magazine is also due in July, so watch this space!
Most importantly, this role doesn’t just allow me to represent GLD and the wider government legal profession – I’ll also be representing my hometown.
Growing up in Armley, West Leeds, and attending a high school in special measures, wider society probably wouldn’t have expected someone like me to achieve much. But with the support of my family and a mix of hard work and good fortune, I have been able to build a fulfilling and engaging career.
A key part of my decision to stand to become President was to be an example for young people who find themselves outside of what a solicitor is perceived to be. I want them to see that this profession can be for them, too.”
Leeds Law Society, which supports and promotes the interests of legal professionals across the city and wider region, continues to play a key role in shaping the future of the legal profession in Yorkshire. Luke’s presidency is expected to bring a renewed focus on inclusion, innovation, and engagement with both the profession and the public.
