Kim Jones to lead Brabners’ pensions practice as industry faces significant reform

Brabners has expanded its pensions team with the appointment of Kim Jones as head of pensions and Nigel Jones as partner, both based in the firm’s Leeds office.

The new leadership as the pensions sector is anticipating a great deal of change; UK government is pushing reforms to improve outcomes for savers and boost the economy through pension fund investment.

Experienced leadership joins Leeds team

Kim and Nigel bring over 60 years of combined experience to the firm, having joined from Freeths alongside legal director Max Ballad. The team specialises in advising trustees and employers on a full spectrum of pensions issues, including the establishment, operation, merger, and wind-up of schemes, as well as buy-in and buyout risk transfer projects.

Their expertise will also bolster Brabners’ corporate practice, which was recognised as a top 15 M&A adviser nationally by Experian last year, by providing advice on the pensions aspects of refinancing, restructurings, sales, and acquisitions.

Adapting to sector reform

The appointments come at a pivotal moment for the pensions industry, with the UK government aiming to consolidate pension funds into “megafunds” to stimulate economic growth.

Brabners’ managing partner, Nik White, commented, “The pensions landscape has shifted significantly, influenced by both the Truss administration’s mini-Budget and the current government’s ambition to leverage pension funds for UK growth. Kim, Nigel, and Max’s combined experience puts us in an excellent position to guide clients through this period of reform and consolidation.”

Kim Jones, the new head of pensions, added, “2025 will present challenges for those responsible for pension schemes as the government delivers the most significant reforms in decades. Employers, funds, and trustees will need experienced advisors to navigate this period of profound change. Together with Nigel, Max, and the wider Brabners team, we aim to support clients during this critical time.”
