Ashley Iredale of Schofield Sweeney was appointed president of the Huddersfield and Dewsbury Incorporated Law Society for 2017/2018 at the recent 136th Annual General Meeting.
Iredale, from Huddersfield, takes over from 2016/2017 President Sarah Cookson of Switalskis. He is a member and head of the private client team at Schofield Sweeney, which merged with Huddersfield firm Armitage Sykes in 2016.
James Stanton, a litigation partner at Schofield Sweeney, described Iredale as “a man of unbounded optimism and my evidence in support of that was his lifelong support of Huddersfield Town Football Club. That optimism was not misplaced; Huddersfield Town is now riding high in the Premier League.”
The new Huddersfield and Dewsbury Incorporated Law Society president will work with elected vice president Samantha Spain of Switalskis and and will lead fellow committee members to develop the work of Cookson, who increased both social and CPD training events, and the society’s participation in and engagement with national consultations.
As president, Cookson also promoted and developed connections with professionals in Huddersfield and Dewsbury following its merger, and worked with the Yorkshire Union of Law Societies to provide a united front in response to consultations.
The Presidential Charity for 2016/2017 was the Hollybank Trust. The society raised £711 from all events held throughout the year.
Cookson said this was “a charity close to my heart as one of my best friends daughter, Lucy aged 3, requires their services on a weekly basis attending their Little Pips nursery. The support they provide to Lucy, and my friend Jo, is amazing.”
