Leeds property lawyer Rodney Dalton passes away at 78

The Leeds business community is mourning the loss of renowned property lawyer Rodney Dalton, who passed away peacefully on 9 September following a brief illness.

Known for his expertise in property law and his vibrant personality, Rodney was a well-recognised figure across the city.

Rodney’s legal career began in the late 1960s when he trained as an articled clerk before becoming a solicitor and partner at his uncle’s firm, S R Dalton & Co. In 1995, he made a move to Brooke North, where he led the property department until 2011. His career continued at Lupton Fawcett, where he worked diligently until shortly before his passing.

Colleagues and friends remember Rodney not only for his legal acumen but also for his charm and larger-than-life presence. Ben Hardy, a former colleague, recalls Rodney as a well-loved figure within the Leeds legal community:

“He was a character from the start, always impeccably dressed and a regular at Sous-le-Nez, enjoying fine food and a bottle of red,” Hardy said. “His legendary lunches and the laughter that often emerged from his office made him a central figure in the firm.”

Rodney’s dedication to his clients was matched by his passion for life. Known for his attention to detail and commitment to his work, he cultivated strong relationships with prominent firms and individuals throughout Leeds. “He worked hard for each and every client, always being the first person to arrive in the office,” Hardy added.

Beyond his professional life, Rodney was devoted to his family. He leaves behind his wife, Helen, and their children, Claudia and Henry, of whom he was immensely proud.

Rodney Dalton’s contribution to Leeds’ legal sector, combined with his warmth and generosity, will be remembered for years to come.
