Leeds’ legaltech sector expands as number of firms increases by 50%

New report highlights growth ahead of major LegalTech conference

A new report from Whitecap Consulting indicates that Leeds’ LegalTech sector is expanding rapidly, with a 50% increase in firms operating in the region over the past year. The findings come as the city prepares to host the fourth annual LegalTech in Leeds Conference, the largest such event outside London, on 24th April 2025 at Cloth Hall Court.

The ‘LegalTech in Leeds’ initiative, launched in 2022, has aimed to foster collaboration between the legal and technology sectors, supporting digital transformation in the industry. The newly published report highlights key trends in the sector’s development, including:

  • A 50% rise in LegalTech firms across the region from 2023 to 2024.
  • An anticipated 1,800 new jobs within the sector by 2025.
  • Over 60 events hosted by LegalTech in Leeds, bringing together more than 4,000 professionals from legal and tech backgrounds.
  • Strategic relationships established with all five law schools in Leeds city centre.
  • Increased gender diversity at LegalTech in Leeds events, with near-equal male-to-female representation among speakers and attendees.
  • Support from 23 sponsors and partners, including law firms, technology providers, universities, and public sector bodies.

Sector Leaders Reflect on Growth and Future Prospects

Ed Whiting OBE, Chief Executive of Leeds City Council, described the report’s findings as evidence of the city’s growing status as a centre for innovation:
“Leeds is home to one of the UK’s largest legal and professional services sectors outside London. The LegalTech sector reflects the city’s ambition and collaborative approach, helping to create new opportunities and drive economic growth.”

Julian Wells, Director at Whitecap Consulting, highlighted the role of regional and national partnerships in fostering innovation:
