Bobby Smithson appointed managing partner at Appleyard Lees

Appleyard Lees is an intellectual property law firm with offices across the UK, including Leeds. The firm has announced the appointment of Bobby Smithson as its new managing partner, effective from 1 January 2024. Smithson, who has been part of the firm since 2002 and a partner since 2009, brings a wealth of experience to his new role.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new position, Smithson stated, “I am honored to take on the role of managing partner at Appleyard Lees. I am grateful for the trust placed in me by my fellow partners and am committed to continuing the great work that David has started alongside our CEO and senior management team. I also look forward to working closely with our skilled team of IP professionals in continuing to deliver excellent client service.”

David Clark, who served as the firm’s managing partner for two and a half years, expressed his confidence in Smithson’s leadership abilities, saying, “I am thrilled to pass the baton to Bobby. His commitment to continuous improvement makes him the perfect choice to lead the firm. I am confident that under Bobby’s guidance, Appleyard Lees will thrive.”

In addition to his new role as managing partner, Smithson holds supervisory roles within the firm, including leading the firm’s ED&I initiatives. He is a signatory to the IP inclusive leaders pledge and has actively contributed to the senior leaders’ diversity think tank since its inception.

The appointment of Bobby Smithson marks a transition in the leadership of Appleyard Lees, and his experience within the firm positions him well to guide its future. With Smithson at the helm, the firm aims to continue its commitment to client services and furthering diversity and inclusion initiatives within the legal profession.
