Paul Verrico, head of EHS at law firm Eversheds Sutherland in Leeds, is continuing his fundraising efforts for Team Verrico. Team Verrico is a cancer charity that Paul funded in memory of his late wife.
19 November will mark ten years since the passing of Anna Verrico. Anna’s husband, Paul, has initiated his second marathon in his 10-in-10 challenge. Paul’s JustGiving page describes the challenge as ‘10 marathons. 10 months. 10 countries.’
The second marathon will take place in Gran Canaria and is dedicated to Anna, as well as aiming to raise funds for the cancer charity Team Verrico.
Team Verrico, established by Paul after Anna’s death, has raised £1.1 million to assist families facing cancer diagnoses by funding essentials such as food, second opinions, counseling, and white goods.
Paul provided an update during his marathon challenge. He outlined the origins of Team Verrico, rooted in Anna’s aim to fund a study on the metastatic pathway of Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC). The charity’s core mission is to support research into new cancer treatments and address challenges faced by long-term survivors.
On 9 November 2023, Paul shared news of a breakthrough in research funded by Team Verrico in the journal Frontiers in Immunology. The studies address ways to identify high-risk relapse cases and inform decisions about immunotherapy as a secondary treatment.
The ongoing research focuses on women with TNBC susceptible to metastases within three years of treatment. Professor Claire Lewis leads the study, aiming to bring findings closer to routine application in UK oncology clinics, with a cost of £52,000.
Paul has raised £11,000 from his first marathon, with an additional £10,000 pledged by clients. Planning to run 10 marathons in 10 months across 10 countries, he aims to raise awareness and secure funding for the second stage of the study. The charity’s mantra, “Never give up!” drives Paul’s commitment.
