Schofield Sweeney appoints new litigation partner, renews Huddersfield Giants partnership

Schofield Sweeney has continued its busy start to 2020 with the appointment of a new litigation partner and the renewal of its partnership with the Huddersfield Giants for the sixth consecutive year.

Simon Lucas has joined the firm from Squire Patton Boggs as a partner in its litigation team. His primary focus is on commercial litigation. His experience includes both English courts and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.

The arrival of Lucas comes at a time of continued growth for Schofield Sweeney, following the promotions of Craig Burman, Simon Glazebrook, Laura Salvati, Daniel Bisby and Susan Ram elsewhere in the firm, as well as continuing work for Yorkshire-based property company YPP.

Lucas said: “Joining the litigation team at Schofield Sweeney ticks all of the right boxes for me—working alongside a talented group of like-minded individuals in a firm that values and promotes excellent client service and sound commercial advice. I am thrilled to be able to play my part in driving the continued development of this forward-thinking firm.”

James Staton, partner and head of litigation at Schofield Sweeney, added: “I am very pleased to welcome Simon to the Schofield Sweeney litigation team. He is an excellent addition to our growing team. Simon’s appointment confirms our commitment to hiring quality lawyers who fit in with our ethos and our ranking as one of the leading litigation teams in the north of England.”

The renewal of Schofield Sweeney’s partnership agreement with the Huddersfield Giants will see the firm remain as the rugby league club’s legal partner for another two years.

The partnership enhances Schofield Sweeney’s investment and commitment to Huddersfield, following its acquisition of Armitage Sykes in 2016 and subsequent relocation into modern offices in the centre of the town.

Manjit Virdee, partner at Schofield Sweeney and a Giants fan, said “I am delighted that we have renewed our partnership with the Huddersfield Giants. It is imperative that we support our local businesses and sports clubs. The Giants are an integral part of the Huddersfield fabric and like ourselves have gone from strength to strength and share the same vision as Schofield Sweeney on working with local communities and wider offerings to Huddersfield and beyond, and we are proud to work alongside them.”

Andrew Watson, commercial director at the Huddersfield Giants, said: “We are delighted to extend the contract with Schofield Sweeney for a sixth season. Schofield Sweeney are the perfect example of making a partnership work—entertaining clients in their hospitality box every single game and attending Giants networking events.”
