Mills & Reeve celebrates record turnover and staff bonuses

Mills & Reeve, the renowned Yorkshire-based law firm, has achieved remarkable financial success in the year 2022/23, with a striking 12% growth in turnover. This accomplishment surpassed their ambitious 11.4% target, pushing turnover to an unprecedented £147 million.

This financial victory has yielded an all-time high staff bonus pool of £2.6 million, distributing bonuses ranging from £2,327 to £2,676 based on tenure.

The triumph follows several milestones:

  • Mills & Reeve secured platinum Investors in People status, an honor only 6% of the UK’s organizations achieve.
  • Celebrating two decades in the UK 100 Best Companies to Work For list.
  • The appointment of Charles Staveley as the new senior partner, succeeding Justin Ripman, who will retire as a partner in 2024. Claire Clarke, Managing Partner, continues for a third term.
  • Partner count surged to 158, with 10 principal associates and eight lateral hires promoted. Five more lateral hires joined recently.
  • Expansion continued with a new office in Oxford in March 2022.
  • A robust 89% client recommendation rate showcased strides in client experience strategy.
  • The firm’s inaugural sustainability report emphasized commitment to sustainability.

Leeds, a key location, experienced a substantial 19% fee income increase due to new clients and lateral hires. Paul Johnson, Leeds office head, lauded the achievement, citing growth in technology, life sciences, and healthcare sectors with clients like UK Infrastructure Bank and Optalysys.

The announcement comes in the wake of Mills & Reeve being named as a top 10 Yorkshire legal adviser in Experian’s H1 report.

Mills & Reeve plans to recruit across disciplines including corporate, commercial, real estate, and regulatory to address escalating demand, ensuring continued success.

Paul Johnson, Head of the Leeds office, shared his enthusiasm, stating, “It has been an excellent year that has witnessed outstanding performances from all our teams. We’ve further solidified our presence in the regional market and advised prominent industry consolidators, such as VetPartners. Our activity in pivotal sectors like technology, life sciences, and healthcare received a boost through client wins from notable organizations like the UK Infrastructure Bank and deep-tech innovator Optalysys, both based in Leeds.”

In light of this financial success, Claire Clarke, the Managing Partner of Mills & Reeve, expressed her satisfaction, stating, “Achieving 12% growth in the current economic climate is an accomplishment we’re incredibly proud of. Our overarching strategy centered around client experience, innovation, and targeted sectors has been instrumental in achieving this success.”

Clarke emphasized the firm’s commitment to fostering a collaborative culture, noting, “We believe in sharing our financial achievements with our dedicated team. Our staff bonus initiative underscores the value we place on every individual’s contribution to our growth. This remarkable year underscores our gratitude to our team for surpassing our growth targets.”
