Marilyn Stowe is the founder and former senior partner of Stowe Family Law LLP, the UK’s largest specialist family law firm.

In February 2017, Marilyn sold her firm – which has ten offices across Central London, Yorkshire, Cheshire, and the Home Counties – to Livingbridge, a private equity firm and stepped away from the firm which she had built up single handed from humble beginnings in 1982 in a converted cobblers shop in East Leeds.

Marilyn was educated at Leeds Girls’ High School, and the University of Leeds. She has lectured at the University of Le Mans, led the Law Society’s Family Law Panel as its first Chief Assessor and Chief Examiner and in 2007 and 2012 was appointed to legal advisory groups working with the Law Commission.

She became one of the UK’s first qualified family mediators in the 1990s, and one of the country’s first Family Law Arbitrators in 2012. She was elected a Fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers an honour reserved for the best practitioners in their respective countries.

Working pro bono, Marilyn also uncovered medical evidence critical in securing the acquittal of fellow solicitor Sally Clark who was wrongly jailed for life for the murders of her two infant sons.

Marilyn still appears regularly in major print and broadcast media including BBC, ITV and Sky News. She is the author of three books, including the bestselling “Divorce & Splitting Up”. In 2007 she began a blog which had 800,000 views in the last 12 months and is in the top ten family law blogs worldwide.

She has been married to Grahame Stowe, a fellow solicitor/part time Judge for over 30 years. Their son Ben is a solicitor who joined Stowe Family Law London office in March 2017.
